Ask a groom his top recommendations for Bandhgalas, and Raghavendra Rathore will definitely be on his list. Combining sharp tailoring with his rich heritage, the fashion designer is known for his elegant menswear collection for festive occasions. But lately, he has also been diving into womenswear. Case in point: an exclusive summer line for women from his eponymous label, Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur. Curious to know more about his latest collection, we caught up with the designer to give us all the deets about it. Read on.
ELLE: Congratulations on your latest summer collection! What made you create a collection for women this season? And what’s the inspiration behind it?
Raghavendra Rathore: All inspiration stems from the classic silhouette, the Bandhgala, which remains the star of any collection. The customer that connects to our brand is a stylish, globally well-travelled individual; she appreciates the classic sensibilities and therefore, the collection is inspired by a black-and-white print story with comfortable silhouettes.
Tailoring these looks into silhouettes that are apt for summer yet offer every level of comfort is the key. Each detail finds its origin from the Jodhpuri Bandhgala; attention to small details done with a delicate overture, tailoring techniques to give fluidity to the collection that makes it feminine. The idea was to create unique designs for a versatile and classic wardrobe.
ELLE: On what occasions can one don the pieces from your collection?
RR: The beauty of this collection is that it can be donned from morning to evening, or it can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the accessories and other garments it is combined with. Extremely classic in its nature, the looks can be enhanced to work for an afternoon lunch, travel, a sundowner, or an evening event as well.
ELLE: We love your menswear line, but we’re curious, will we see more for women as well?
RR: Absolutely, just as there is a woman behind every successful man, the Jodhpuri Bandhgala is equally complimented by its female avatar. We have always had a special offering for our women clientele and will continue to add new product offering to enhance the choices available to our customers.
ELLE: Has the pandemic changed your approach to design in any way? If yes, then how?
RR: There has not been a single person, system or brand that has not been affected by the pandemic. Readapting design, clothes and services offered to the customers is something we have had to shift gears around. Since the experience people are looking for has changed, clothes need to be an accent to the personality and last for a lifetime. Being primarily bespoke in our offering, home-shopping and zoom consultations have taken precedence as our goal remains to keep the customer’s comfort and safety at the centre of everything.
ELLE: What’s next for Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur?
RR: Stand strong with society and find various ways to give back and rebuild confidence in our social fabric. Raghavendra Rathore Foundation (RRF) is working meticulously in achieving these goals, and we are always on the lookout to invite partnerships and ideas for the same.
