Exclusive: Why Donatella Versace for Givenchy is cool

Donatella Versace has joined the Givenchy “Family” campaign for FW ’15 shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

“I approached my friend Donatella because she represents what a fashion icon is to me. We thought it was time to break boundaries and give a strong message about how to think fashion,” says creative director Riccardo Tisci over email. “We share the same values and she is so inspiring to me. I think of us as a group of friends or a big family.”

The intention was to foster a sense of a global, unified fashion community. Even Donatella Versace reiterated on Instagram, “I believe in breaking rules… I want to get rid of the old system, work together and make fashion a true global community.”  Donatella also embodies the Givenchy woman to to Tisci, she has “a strong identity and confidence”.

Tisci doesn’t take the focus away from the models – the campaign features Candice Swanepoel and Mariaclara Boscono. Plus, the house has also put its weight behind Chris Lee, who Tisci describes as “an intelligent and modern Chinese beauty”, and Victor Cruz, “a charismatic gentleman with a bad boy physique”.

They’re all part of his “gang” and shown to have a crazy time in a Victorian residence.
