Anita Dongre Grassroot marries design with a social conscience, which is to say, it gives you one more reason to buy that gorgeous ikat jacket. The label’s spring/summer line, out in stores and online now, is filled with fabrics that breathe, like muslin, khadi and handspun cotton, all-natural dyes and a colour palette so earthy, it looks like a landscape rendered in cloth. In a way, it is.
Grassroot works with NGOs, like Mijwan, SEWA and Khamir in Kutch, and individual artisans to bring dying traditions to the market, where they might have a chance of survival. The spring/summer line features techniques like tie-and-dye, kantha, mirror work, chikankari, block-printing, phulkari, Bhujodi, Ahir embroidery and ikat. The fits are comfortable—no belly-hugging or chest-constricting—and fuss-free. With some smart layering, that ikat jacket could see you well past spring/summer.
Shop the collection online or at the stores in Mumbai (Altamount Road, Linking Road) and Delhi (Khan Market, opens February 13, 2016)
