First look: Manish Malhotra’s Summer/Resort 2015 line

“It’s nice to speak about an issue like gender violence at a platform like fashion week,” says Manish Malhotra.  On March 18, Malhotra presents his Blue Runway collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015 in Mumbai, in association with WEvolve. To bring you up to speed: it’s a global campaign with partners like the World Bank, UN Women and ELLE India, that looks to challenge existing social norms that lead to gender-based violence. (But you knew that already, if you read this piece.)

It’s been hard for him to edit, and narrow down exactly what to show. You can tell because the line has 56 pieces. “It has blue, which has been a huge colour for me ever since I introduced it two years ago. It’s been phenomenal for sangeets and receptions. It wasn’t always on the agenda for weddings,” says Malhotra. “This collection has indigo, powder blues, ivory, yellow – it’s the colour of this year – and lots of soft, peachy pinks.”

Summery hues and modern influences dominate his Indian line. Expect beaded-fringe saris, halter neck and off-shoulder blouses, jackets teamed with trousers, shorts worn dresses, and flowy resort gowns (“which I’ve never done before”). What you won’t find? The hybrid half-saris and sari-gowns, which invariably leave him thinking, “Wait what was it supposed to be?” He explains, “I like to celebrate Indian fashion, I do want to reinvent it. But I stick to what I do best, and I like the sari to be a sari.”
