Suneet Varma launches his first ever western couture collection titled ‘Dream Couture’ at his annual show at DLF Emporio in New Delhi on November 21. “I’ve dabbled in western silhouettes with an Indian influence, but this time I’ve gone a step further and done western couture. It’s a line that celebrates Hollywood glamour, the sexy dressing of Studio 54 and youthful exuberance,” says Varma.
Expect 15 models and writer-entrepreneur Deepti Verma, artist Blanca Peralta, princess Mriganka Singh of Kashmir, and Varma’s friends Rhea Madaan, Stuti Dixit, Mohini Boparai and Latika Khaneja to share the ramp. They will showcase his collection wearing accessories by Diacolor Jewelry – fittingly, even the colour palette of the line is inspired by precious gems. The collection is made up of 35 gowns, and it includes a mix of fun and flirty numbers in shaded chiffons and lightweight silk organza; some of the structured gowns are made of silk taffeta and knits. Expect details such as soft cowls, large bows, cinched waistbands and beaded tassels.
The Grecian dresses are layered with Swarovski crystal mesh drapes – a first for an Indian designer. “It’s a new innovation from Swarovski, never been shown in India and in fact. It’s only been used by a few couture houses in Europe. It’s a fine, metal mesh studded with exquisite crystals and it’s sensual and fluid like liquid crystal,” says Varma. “We had to experiment quite a bit with the mesh. We found that it’s best draped close to the body so that it can move as the body does.”
