How to get Anushka Sharma’s look from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

When we finally managed to tear our eyes away from Ranbir Kapoor and Fawad Khan in the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil trailer, we were smitten by Anushka Sharma’s avatar in the movie. In keeping with her brief as a modern Muslim girl, Manish Malhotra gave her wardrobe a contemporary update. “My approach to Anushka’s look was to give it a real-girl touch. We have blended traditional and modern details throughout the movie. So, you will see Anushka teaming long chikan and threadwork kurtas with ripped jeans through many of her scenes,” says Malhotra.

And while we are loathe to pick favourites, Sharma’s bridal avatar is a definite winner. Dressed in a resplendent Manish Malhotra lehenga, the actor has been accessorised with an opulent polki set. It is the statement jhoomar, however, that has all our attention.

“For her bridal look, we kept in mind the cultural direction of what a modern Muslim girl would opt for. The key elements of the ensemble are the long-trailed dupatta and the revival of red with muted hues of salmon pink and peach. While the former is the traditional highlight, the modernity comes through in the interesting play of colours. The thread-work on the outfit gives it a certain old-world charm reminiscent of Lucknow’s noble past,” elaborates Malhotra.

Make-up artist Puneet Saini holds credit for the kohl-defined eyes that quickly became Sharma’s signature look in the movie. “Waterproof kohl is definitely the way to go. Using a small pencil brush, smudge brown eyeshadow along the lashline. Add an eyeliner for a more dramatic look. Matte eyeshadow palettes (in shades of brown) are your best friend for contouring along the crease of the eye,” she decodes.

Saini was dazzled by the brilliance of the bridal outfit during the trials and used that as her starting point. A little bit of sheen and shimmer worked its way into the look as well. “While the hair and make-up is essential, there’s another thing that’s instrumental in creating a look: Karan Johar. He’s very involved as a director; his senses are heightened. He may not know what a gel liner is, but he knows exactly what he wants his character to look like. All of us, including Anushka, were thrilled each time we looked at the monitors during the shoot!” smiles Saini.

She also advises brides to add a hint of drama to their eye make-up this wedding season. “Smokey eye doesn’t have to be black any more. Play with different colour palettes and gradations within that until you find the one that feels right,” she recommends.
