ELLE’s Fashion Director, Malini Banerji says, there’s a Victorian brand of romance in the air.
The chin-grazing ruffles, corseted waists and demure hemlines spotted on the spring runways pointed to one mood: Victoriana.
While Alexander McQueen’s clean ruffles and rosy prints are fit for a lady, Zimmermann infused more girliness with shorter, flouncy hems. The romantic vibe practically begs for shades of pink; cut to saccharine pastels at Gauri & Nainika, peachy-freshness at Oscar de la Renta and dusty roses at Rodarte.
The volume of the Victorian bustle ballooned at Giles’ gothic presentation, and a similar effect was found at Erdem and in JW Anderson’s poofy sleeves – the bigger, the better is the anthem for this trend. The simplest way to channel the look? Put all the focus on the collar: a frilly, high-neck will do just as well as a sliver of velvet ribbon around your neck.
