3 things we love about the latest addition to Mumbai's fun-Asian-dining circuit
One of Bengaluru’s favourite Asian-fusion restaurants (also by the creators of Monkey Bar) has made its way to Mumbai and we’ve got the verdict. Here are the three things we love about The Fatty Bao.
It feels homey
With whimsical interiors, the quiet 60-cover resto-bar is designed to bring in a hint of Asia’s culture, says fashion designer Anshu Arora (who worked on the space). “The idea was to bring in lot of aspects of Asia, like the bao map, the pop colours and the little panda at the bar. We wanted to recreate a fun Asian experience in a private setting. It’s like a tiny, homey version of the Bengaluru outpost (the latter is spread over two floors). So when you enter Fatty Bao it’s a little world of its own.”
The new menu is Mumbai-friendly
Chef Manu Chandra says that he designed the menu to include ingredients that are fresh, and available locally. “Of course, our signature dishes are on there, but we wanted to use more local stuff on the menu. The seafood here is great so I decided to do a Bombil bao. Also because we have a better skill set available here – we’ve done more dim sums on the menu. My personal favourite dish on the menu is the Wild Mushroom and Truffle oil dim sum.”
The food lives up to the hype
At the Mumbai outpost, vegetarians won’t be disappointed. Of course, you’ll find the succulent fried eggplant or pork baos – which we practically inhaled. But the rains call for dim sums (reach for the shrimps) and ramen (the chicken ramen has just the comfort you need on a gloomy day). Oh, and don’t forget to load up on the The Fatty Oysters (fresh Cochin oysters broiled with soy butter, chorizo and ponzu sauce).
