How to: Nerd chic, like a Rajesh Pratap Singh nurse

This is how Mickey Contractor created a look that goes perfectly with thick glasses

You’ve seen Rajesh Pratap Singh’s glamorous nurses. Now see how Mickey Contractor, Director of Make-up Artistry for M.A.C India, created the nerdy look.

The look was ’50s-inspired
“Rajesh showed me black and white pictures of nurses from the ’50s. They could have been wearing a red mouth or dark lips. Even Rajesh was happy to do a red mouth, because he did red boxes to go with the show.”

It had to look good with glasses
“We played around with the eyes, so that they stood out. We did a soft crease line and did the upper lid with a beige-y gold – more beige than gold, actually – just did a wash of that on the entire lid. Then we used half lashes to extend the eyes, and did a long eyeliner. The skin was very matte, because we were going for the ’50s.”

The same red had to match all skin tones
“We used three kinds of red, for different skin tones. For darker skin, we used a plum outline, and filled in the lip with the liner, and then used a Russian Red over it. For the fairer girls we went straight with the Russian Red all over. For the mid-tone girls we used a Redd lip pencil all over and over it we did a Russian Red again.”

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:

Start with Fix+, an aqua-spritz of vitamin and minerals, with a calm-the-skin blend of green tea, chamomile, cucumber. It adds radiance and helps prep the skin.

Next apply the Studio Moisture Cream, a super-rich moisturiser boosted with skin-nourishing extracts including passion fruit, spinach leaf, green tea, algae, wheat germ and coconut.

Correct and conceal using the Pro Concealer and Correct Palette.

Apply M.A.C Powder Blush in Mocha on cheeks.

Use Cream Colour Base in Hush on eyes.

Next apply the Embark and Ricepaper eye shadow.

Apply Blacktrack Fluidline Eyeliner Gel.

Use Chromagraphic Pencil in NW25/NC30 to outline and define the eyes.

Use Lash No. 4 for added drama.

Finish with a coat of 3D in Extra Dimension Mascara on the lashes for extra volume.

Line lips with a red lip pencil and finish it off with Russian Red lipstick.
