The right way to wear gloss—according to a professional make-up artist

The season’s hottest trend is gloss—it took over the runways internationally and it’s making its comeback here too. The issue with this trend though is that it can get quite tricky, especially when not worn correctly. From glossy eyes to glassy lips, Stafford Braganza, National Make-up Artist NYX Professional Makeup gives us the low-down on the various ways you can wear the trend, and wear it right!

ELLE: What are this season’s hottest makeup trends?

Stafford Braganza: Matte lips have taken a backseat, and it is now time for gloss domination. Suddenly on the spring catwalks, we saw—almost out of nowhere—glossy lips all over the place. There was the fresh fuchsia hue at Chanel, a lustrous blood red at Haider Ackermann, created by Inge Grognard.

ELLE: Since we are slowly transitioning into summer, what are the key tips to keep in mind in terms of increasing the longevity of your make-up?

SB: It all starts with prepping your skin correctly. Here’s how you can go about it:

Step 1: Use a primer on both your face and eyes.
Step 2: Use an oil-free foundation.
Step 3: Layer your foundation with a matching powder to set.
Step 4: Apply makeup using light layers, remember its summer and you want to feel light-weight.
Step 5: Dip your eyeshadow brush in a priming spray before applying on eyelids that way the eyeshadow stays on all day long.
Step 6: Wear waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Then finally use a makeup setting spray to set your make-up.

ELLE: Three ways in which you can wear gloss?

SB:Use your finger to dab a little lip gloss under your brow bone and cheek bones to instantly achieve a glowing, shiny highlighting effect. Keep in mind that a light high-shine or shimmering lip gloss is best suited to replace highlighter. It’s easy to turn your gloss into a cream blush. Tip: When you use your lipstick as a blush, you are creating a monochromatic makeup look that is super flattering. Also, as a rule of thumb, avoid super dark or bright lipsticks that could look too harsh on your cheeks.

Finally apply it on your lips the correct way. Follow these 6 simple steps to apply lip gloss perfectly.

Step 1: Start by prepping your lips with a lip scrub
Step 2: Make your lips soft by applying a lip balm
Step 3: Blot the excess lip balm with a tissue
Step 4: Draw a line with a lip Pencil starting from the cupid’s bow and then from the outer corner in followed by the other side. Follow the same way on the lower lips as well
Step 5: Apply lipstick followed by a gloss
