Your cheat sheet to wearing leather this season

Celeb-approved and ultra fabulous

You probably already own an omnipresent leather jacket (or two) thanks to its undeniable emergence everywhere in the fashion circuit—from the runways of Saint Laurent to being a street-style favourite. But this season, leather is not limited to your edgy biker jacket, the material has won our approval in the form of flattering skirts, body-hugging trousers, tops decorated with silver hardware, and chunky, ankle boots.

From the belted trench as seen at Proenza Schouler Fall 2017 to the leather berets spotted at Dior Spring Summer 2020, there are multiple sartorial directions you can go in. For an unconventional take on the trend, pair a cutout zip jacket over a bralette like Janhvi Kapoor. Or, opt for a bright, flared, high-shine leather skirt for a street style edge like Priyanka Chopra. All that’s needed to complete the look is a pair of black sunglasses and unfazed attitude.

Here are the 10 celeb-approved cool girl ways to wear leather this season:

Sports luxe like Selena Gomez: When Daniel Lee presented his debut Bottega Veneta campaign, he offered us endless inspiration for the season ahead–and the ease with which Selena Gomez wore her leather joggers was louche luxury at its very best. Team them with a classic Hermes Birkin, a cosy sweater, and know you're ahead of the curve.
Glam-heavy like Rosie Huntington Whiteley: Black tie attire needn't be the most boring category imaginable. Take things up a notch, channel extreme pizzazz, and give yourself a reason to attend the next fancy party on your social calendar.
The new bourgeois like Priyanka Chopra: In recent months, fashion has found a new fascination in the wardrobe of the bourgeoisie. Pastel silhouettes, satin headbands and ankle-length skirts are appearing in abundance–but the best way to twist tradition? The introduction of tight leathers to the mix. Look at bright flare-heavy skirts (and self-tie heels) for the perfect balance between propriety and subversion.
Street style like Kendall Jenner: You can't be prepared for fall until you have a few leather pieces in your wardrobe. Welcome this tricky season with open arms and go all out a leather ensemble like Kendall Jenner.  Added bonus: You are most likely to get papped while strutting down the street.
Matrix Reloaded like Bella Hadid: It looks like the '90s aren't going anywhere any time soon. It's clear then that The Matrix can remain a staple reference for your day-to-day look. Prada's cool trenches, worn over leather co-ords make for retro futurism at its new-season best.
Extreme '80s like Janhvi Kapoor: If any decade lends itself to head-to-toe leather, it's the '90s—the era of Brigitte Nielsen and Madonna, cutout leathers and patent shine. And Janhvi's sculptural bustier jacket is the best around, worn with an asymmetrical boho skirt, provides the perfect remix of high-octane nostalgia.
Modern-day disco like Alia Bhatt: Trade your run-of-the-mill floral off shoulders for a edgy leather blouse. If you aren't afraid to be OTT this season, might we suggest some crystal fence like coverings?
The jungle influence like Kareena Kapoor Khan: When the star stepped out in this leather-heavy outfit, the internet went into overdrive. Those looking to channel Kareena's spirit but with a slightly more low-key impact can sling theirs over Celine pencil skirts and leather bustiers with a popping neon accessory.
