It feels like only last month that the Met red carpet gave us enough make-up inspo to last a year and only last week that Victoria Beckham launched her own beauty line. But hey, here we are at the turn of a new decade, and beauty is having more than a moment.
2019 was a year full of firsts and first-world drama; celebrations and inspirations. Things were said and things were done, and we can #neverforget. Ahead, we rehash only the most unforgettable things to come out of the beauty-verse this year.
Kim Kardashian looked slick at the Met

It’s only fair to give kween Kim’s crystal rainfall of a dress first mention. It did take 8 months to make and it did bring Thierry Mugler back after a 20-year hiatus. The OG K-fam star emerged dripping in beaded crystals at the camp-themed night on a latex, corseted dress, skin shining with that good oil. Get this – she required corset-breathing lessons to stay in it, and for that alone, this is one red carpet moment we’ll never forget.
James Charles v/s Tati Westbrook happened

Two popular beauty influencers, one big controversy. It started when James Charles endorsed Sugar Bear Hair on Instagram, and his mentor of sorts, Tati Westbrook, didn’t like it one bit as the gummies were direct competition to her own line, Halo Beauty. It ended with much YouTube drama and one of the biggest bae-reakups of the year. Meanwhile, we’re still forgetting to take our hair supplements.
Katrina Kaif launched her beauty line

If RiRi and Posh and Lara can do it, so can Kat. The screen scorcher launched her own beauty line called Kay Beauty in collaboration with Nykaa – making headlines as #MakeupThatKares. If you missed that homegrown beauty moment, we’re happy to report the line covers lips, eyes and brows, and is vegan, cruelty-free and dermatologically tested. Our fave picks: the MATTE-inee Lip Crayon that glides on great and MaeStrobe Metallic Lip Toppers for a 3D lip.
Kylie Jenner became a billionaire

Now wasn’t that a moment when you realised that the shy 10-year-old you grew up with since Season 1 of Keeping up With the Kardashians now goes by the title of billionaire? Earlier this year, 21-year-old Kylie Jenner was declared the youngest-ever self-made billionaire, with an estimated fortune of $1 billion. The Kardashian family had birthed a new queen, the meme world went loco, and you counted your Kylie Lip Kits, mentally calculating how much you had to contribute to the occasion.
Naomi Janumala became the new face of Fenty Beauty

We already loved Rihanna’s inclusive make-up line, and now we love it more because guess who they appointed as the face of the campaign? 19-year old Indian stunner Naomi Janumala who was discovered on Instagram, and who – fun fact – also happens to be funnyman Johnny Lever’s niece. She’s already featured in campaigns for Alexander Wang, H&M, Adidas, and walked the ramp at New York Fashion Week.

Udaipur-born and Mumbai-based, Suman Rao brought home some accolades as fine as her jawline. After representing Rajasthan at the Miss India 2019 pageant and winning the title, she went on to being crowned Miss World Asia 2019 during the Miss World 2019 beauty pageant held in London last month. Look out for her on-screen, as the 21-year old has expressed she’s an aspiring actor.
Euphoria gave us new makeup goals

This year, we met and became best friends with four badass girls with mad make-up skills on HBO’s Euphoria, and we couldn’t have been more grateful. There’s one for each of us to relate to: Rue with her glitter tears, Jules with her technicolour eyes, Maddy with her face diamantes, and Kat with her full gothic vibe. Make-up artist Doniella Davy did us good.
