New research carried out by the National Osteoporosis Society has revealed there’s a concerning number of young people following blogger-approved fad diets, and not replacing missed nutrients.
Of the 2,000 adult participants involved in the survey, 239 were under 25. Many of these younger adults were found to be reducing or cutting out dairy from their diet completely, and not replacing the bone strengthening stuff with any good sources of calcium.
“Diet in early adulthood is so important because by the time we get into our late 20s, it is too late to reverse the damage caused by poor diet and nutrient deficiencies and the opportunity to build strong bones has passed,” explains Professor Susan Lanham-New, the clinical advisor to the National Osteoporosis Society.
The research suggests a lot of Gen Y and X are turning to social media for their dietary advice, which we know, can be risky business. Another recent survey carried out by the Food Standards Agency supports the theory, with nearly half of the 16-24 year olds involved claiming to have an intolerance to dairy, even though only 24 per cent had gotten their condition diagnosed by a doctor.
Considering half of women over the age of 50 develop osteoporosis, it’s so important to ensure calcium is a big part of your diet, dairy or no dairy. Especially in your 20’s.
Incorporating cereal, baked beans, salmon, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables into your diet is a good place to start, to reach that 700mg of calcium every adult needs to consume daily, for healthy bones.
