Designer Shriya Bhupal’s Hyderabad based label Shriya Som is known for its contemporary yet rooted approach to design. Attention to detail, handcrafted embellishments, high-end fabrics and signature floral patterns are the USP of the label. It’s 2021 Bridal-Festive collection – ‘The Wild Iris’ draws inspiration from the radiant iris flowers and is the perfect amalgamation of timeless couture and reimagined silhouettes. We got in touch with the designer to know more about the collection; take a look:
ELLE: What is the story behind choosing the Iris flower as your inspiration for the collection.
Shriya Bhupal: The Wild Iris draws inspiration from a radiant blooming Iris flower, representing a new beginning. Also the flower blooms in a variety of colours such as blue, white and red, all signature colours of the season. The Iris is also a perennial flower that blooms for a long time, signifying timeless re-wearable pieces from this season’s collection.
ELLE: What sets your collection apart?
SB: Our signature style is to marry quintessential Indian craftsmanship with western styles and silhouettes. While our bridal wear aims to bring a fresh and elegant rendition for a cocktail ceremony or sangeet, every Shriya Som garment is designed thoughtfully, keeping the modern woman and her varied lifestyle in mind.
ELLE: Tell us more about the silhouettes, embellishments and fabric techniques featured in your collection.
SB: In the continued exploration and extension of Shriya Som classics, ‘The Wild Iris’ collection features key pieces portrayed as textured gowns, layered ruffle dresses with elegant fringe details, ostrich-feathered occasion wear, and surface-embroidered bridal wear. The collection is a perfect blend of timeless couture through a bold yet elegant interpretation of evening wear.
ELLE: What are some aspects you keep in mind while designing evening and bridal wear?
SB: Classic styles with delicate embroidery and intricate details are what I love to design. We work on garments that can be styled in various ways to give a fresh avatar every time it’s worn.
Shriya Som’s ‘The Wild Iris’ collection is available at the Shriya Som flagship store in Hyderabad, as well as multi-designer boutiques such as Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop, Ensemble and Aza.
