Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee just launched a flagship store in the heart of New Delhi, located next to the Qutub Minar. Housing 57 Dutch hand-painted chandeliers, 112 antique carpets, and a variety of rare artefacts the store is the perfect background for Sabyasachi’s pieces. His passion for the revival and protection of art and craft is truly visible in this 13,500 sq ft. of space.
Between the smoky ittar bottles and Indian miniatures you’ll find couture that is every bit as opulent as the surroundings. Housed in a separate wing from the ready-to-wear collection, the couture wing features bridal wear, jewellery by Kishandas and Co. (for Sabyasachi) and trunks and luggage by Trunks Company Jaipur. The ready-to-wear side features more saris and kurtas, plus a whole floor of menswear.
The mood of the space fits with Mukherjee’s dark interpretation of Indian wear. The palette echoes his latest foray into plush reds and blacks, but pops of pastel and floral motifs are seen in certain sections. The space is every bit as emotive as his fashion shows. Step back onto the busy streets of New Delhi and you’ll be left with an odd feeling of having travelled back from another time and place.
