Death to Snapchat: Instagram has entered the flower crown filter game

This is not a good time to be Evan Spiegel. Not only has he been unofficially declared a persona non grata in India owing to his alleged thoughts on our country’s economic state, but the Snapchat CEO now has to contend with the fact that Snapchat is, well, dead.

If there was one thing Snapchat had over Instagram, it was its ability to make us look like a dog princess perpetually prepping for Coachella. But with Instagram’s latest update, we can now be all that (and more) on Insta stories. In a bid to make our lives ‘fun and entertaining’, Instagram has murdered Snapchat and is now frolicking around in our flower crown-bedecked Insta stories. Aside from koala ears and a Disney villain crown, you will also get a ‘Rewind’, ‘Hashtag stickers’ and an ‘eraser brush’ with this update.

Today, we’re introducing face filters, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining. Whether you’re sitting on the couch at home or you’re out and about, you can use face filters to express yourself and have playful conversations with friends. Simply open the camera and tap the new face icon in the bottom right corner. Tap a filter to try it on and send it to your friends or add it to your story. They even work with Boomerang! Also today, we’re rolling out three new creative tools. Make videos that play in reverse with “Rewind,” add context to your story with a hashtag sticker and get creative with the eraser brush. Instagram has always been the place you can go to turn regular moments into something you can’t wait to share. Now, you have more fun and easy ways to express yourself and connect with the people you care about most. To learn more about today’s updates, check out help.instagram.com. These updates are available as part of Instagram version 10.21 for iOS in the Apple App Store and for Android in Google Play.

Reportedly, the photo-sharing app has six times the user base of Snapchat and double the number of users for the Story feature. Instagram, like your garden variety bully, blatantly copied Snapchat’s signature 24-hour stories and now the filters. Needless to say, the Internet is not letting this slide.
