There are few plot points that Bollywood insists on pushing in every mainstream production to hit the big screen: Middle-aged men as college students, mom’s home food, kids leaving for America and coming back as sexy adults, item numbers and the wholesome girl next door. Make no mistake in the case of the last two, the item girl doesn’t stand a chance becoming the blushing bride with sanskaar coming out her ears.
Note to self: the girl with the exposed midriff never gets the boy. Cocktail taught us that.
But the latest piece of wholesomeness comes in the form of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s sweet relationship. Like the plot of something that Karan Johar wrote, directed, produced and promoted on his show Koffee with Karan, their relationship is one aashirvaad short of your mom’s homemade khichdi — wholesome.
Over the years, the industry has developed its own ideas of Ranbir’s track record with the ladies, thanks to Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor’s joint appearance on that infamous episode of Koffee with Karan. “Ranbir’s a great friend, I don’t know if he’s a great boyfriend. He’s got great family values,” is what Sonam had to say. “She did a great job for holding onto him for that long…” was added in context to his relationship with Deepika. Deepika cemented this with a, “I think he needs to work on his boyfriend skills”, later implying that Ranbir had cheated on her on multiple occasions.
Eight years and one very public break-up with Katrina Kaif later, and Ranbir seems to have taken Deepika Padukone’s advice by working on his boyfriend skills. Tell us that doesn’t sound like the plot of a movie you would watch. Everybody plays themselves, especially Kareena Kapoor Khan throwing shade at Katrina on Karan’s couch. In fact, it’s dangerously close to a few actual movies we can think of:
Ranbir really took the plot of Bachna Ae Haseeno and ran with it
Heartbroken Raj Ranbir sets out to find true love with the girl who’s been there and adored him all along. In the movie version, there’s a chubby aspiring actress who grows up watching her celebrity crush on the big screen. Let’s call her Alia. She grows up, gets famous, and bags a role opposite her childhood superstar. They fall in love. Ummmm…
Suddenly everyone’s invested.
Mmmm… smells like mom’s cooking.
Alia is integrating well with his fam. That’s Ranbir’s mom Neetu and their shared best friend Ayaan Mukherji. He’s also the director of Brahmastra. Coincidence? Probably not.
Here’s Alia with her mom and Ranbir, all matching. It’s the first sign of love. It’s also worth mentioning Alia now almost exclusively wears salwar-kameezes.
Not a bellybutton in sight.
Aside from spending a whole bunch of time together, Alia is also the first girl who is out and about with the Kapoor clan.
But with all the attention the couple has been getting, there have been a few sisters out there begging Alia to run in the opposite direction. With comments like:
‘It should rather be #AliaRan-(Run)…!! I love Alia, katrina, Deepika as much as I hate Ranbir…!!’
Harsh.
But if this is a Bollywood production, Karan Johar will make sure her heart’s safe right? Right??
Even if their relationship has been engineered by Bollywood’s puppet master-in-chief, the two seem happy. So happy that he’s taking her out for dinner with his family. She’s even holding hands with his niece and honestly, it’s cute. So, let’s just try and be happy for them.
Remember it really is all about loving your mom’s cooking. family.
