Contrary to the avalanche of fawning comments that declare “Yass, power couple goals” every time a picture of them is posted online, Jay-Z and Beyoncé are just as vulnerable to a rocky relationship as the rest of us, a fact that Jay-Z has addressed in a new and surprisingly candid interview.
Jay-Z has long been accused of being unfaithful to his wife. In 2014, a video was leaked of Beyoncé’s sister, Solange, attacking Jay-Z in a lift after the Met Gala in what was said to be a fight over the rapper’s numerous infidelities.

Jay then addressed the accusations fully on 4:44′s title track with the line: “I apologize often womanize/ Took for my child to be born/ See through a woman’s eyes/ Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles/ Took me too long for this song/ I don’t deserve you.”
In a new interview with TV host Van Jones, Jay was asked why he chose to fight for his marriage, with the rapper responding that his wife was “my soulmate, the person I love.”

Couples experiencing problems can either “address it or pretend until it blows up,” he added.
“For us, we chose to fight for our love. For our family. To give our kids a different outcome. To break that cycle for black men and women.”
“We were never a celebrity couple—we were a couple that happened to be celebrities. We are real people.”
