As we celebrate 70 years of independence, Times Music released a new music video starring Kangana Ranaut to ride the hashtag frenzy. The video called ‘Love Your Country’ has Ranaut lip-syncing to the track sung by Siddhart Sharma, Piyush Wasnik and Yash Chauhan. Oh, and it’s already crossed 100,000 hits. We see an agonized Ranaut respond to depressing headlines about dowry, corruption and infanticide with… umm, a lot of flag-waving. It’s interspersed with visuals of kids playing fancy dress with the tricolour painted on their cheeks, and Ranaut routinely appears onscreen waving the flag and saluting proudly against CGI clouds – in case you forget she’s the star of the video. Sadly, even a three-time National Award-winning actor like her can’t salvage this ham-fisted script. We can’t help but think this was a wasted opportunity.
