All roads led to Karan Johar’s swanky Bandra pad as the director rang in his 45th birthday last night. But when you play collective BFF to all of Bollywood, your birthday isn’t just a typical wine-and-cheese soirée either. Bollywood’s leading ladies showed up in droves, starting with Alia Bhatt who cancelled all her plans for the day and got the party started early at the Dharma Productions headquarters. After all the infamy she’s faced on his Koffee with Karan couch, the sprightly 24-year-old turned the tables and put him on the receiving end of an inquisitive microphone.
And as it turns out, the suave chat show master has a few soft spots too — He refuses to introduce his newborn twins, Roohi and Yash, to the world just yet. “I still remember the time my mother was doing something with a picture of the kids on her phone and it got uploaded by mistake. She freaked out and called me. Thankfully, the picture didn’t reach anybody’s hands and we rested in peace,” he laughed it off.
But in the meantime, his fatherly streak is present in full swing with Alia; “She might end up inheriting some of my properties and whatever money I’m left with,” he quipped. Their bond stretches all the way back to his 40th birthday party, which just so happened to be Alia’s first Karan Johar party. “I really can’t forget how Karan left everything and held my hand for the next half an hour to introduce me to everybody,” smiled Alia.
The chat then segued into a grand bash at his place, with 128 people in attendance. Karan admitted that the guestlist was giving him a bad case of the nerves, but Alia was having none of it. “Why are you even nervous? There is a bash at your place every week,” she dismissed.
If your invite got bungled up in the mail, we’d like you to know that Karan’s fears were ill-founded. The bash was a roaring success if our Instagram news feed is anything to go by, and everyone knows that Instagram never lies. The recent Cannes-returned troika — Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan — set aside the jet lag and turned up in style. While Deepika went in for a mesh Self Portrait number, Aishwarya opted for a cold shoulder again, after her successful Cannes red carpet outing. Some of that red carpet fever got to Alia as well, who opted for a thigh-high slit.
