Marks & Spencer’s new collection is full of summer wardrobe essentials

The rising temperature calls for a wardrobe reset; look no further than Marks & Spencer’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection for everything from classic styles to contemporary silhouettes. Monotone pantsuits, midi dresses, skinny jeggings—the collection includes work wear and casual staples, as well as lingerie and beach wear. It’s marked by bright colours, playful prints and plenty of stripe-on-stripe. We caught up with Francesca Zedda, global head of Style & Trends at Marks & Spencer India to bring you the key trends for this season.

ELLE: Tell us a little about Marks & Spencer’s S/S 2019 collection.

Francesca Zedda: Spring usually sees the basics redefined through fresh shapes and playful styling details. This range, designed in our head office in London, is all about refined colour palettes and prints along with modern silhouettes.

I recommend investing in stripes. It’s a classic print, and it looks flattering on all body types. Relaxed, pared back tailoring is set to be a big trend this season too, and an oversized blazer is the perfect way to work this trend. Wear one over jeans for a dressed-down look or inject some colour into your wardrobe with a bold, bright or pastel shade. I also want to call out the jumpsuit as a key wardrobe piece—it’s easy to wear and can be styled up or down.

ELLE: What was the idea behind introducing in-store stylists as a part of Marks & Spencer’s Rethink campaign?

FZ: Rethink makes Marks & Spencer your trusted style partner, offering guidance, inspiration and versatility for your wardrobe. It’s our first tailored campaign for customers in India.

ELLE: A style tip to carry us through summer?

FZ: Linen is your ultimate summer fabric. It is light and allows your skin to breathe. At Marks & Spencer, we have vast linen offerings across colours and prints. These pieces are also super light, making them ideal for holiday packing. I recommend going for a leopard-print across linen tees, dresses and trousers, or investing in tunic dresses.
