The lazy girl’s guide to creating celebrity hairdos in under 5 minutes

Emulate Katrina Kaif's effortless style

Anyone who hates getting up early in the morning will relate to the struggle between deciding whether to spend an extra 20 minutes in bed or attempt a hairdo that creates the illusion of you being a normal functioning member of society. Needless to say, the 20 blissful moments usually win. Is there a way to balance your innate love of sleep with your desire to look properly finished? We’re glad you asked.

The messier the better

The way to turn a bad hair day into a good one is easier than you might have thought. The key is to get messy. Celebrity hairstylist Daniel Bauer agrees, “The more you structure your hairstyle, the more age it brings — perfectly undone is more youthful.”

Preparation is key

Before you go to town on the messy hair and messier ponytails, Bauer asserts that your arsenal needs two weapons at all times: Hairspray and a good styling cream. Avoid getting confused by the massive amounts of hairstyling products available in the market and stick to the basics. According to him, these products are the key to looking like a star with minimal effort.

Do away with fly-aways

If you want your hairdo to say ‘messy’ instead of ‘messed up’, you need to do something about those pesky fly-aways. While supermodel Tyra Banks swears by her trusty lip balm to smooth out fly-away hairs when she’s on the go, Bauer suggests using a little hairspray on your brush to get rid of them.

Washing hair is overrated

You did not misread that. You’ve got the blessings of the man behind Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif’s perpetually good hair days to avoid shampooing your hair frequently. “The best hair to style is hair that hasn’t been washed in a few days,” Bauer says. To avoid looking like a re-animated version of Severus Snape, make friends with a dry shampoo and never let it go.

We got Bauer to decode some of our favourite celebrity hair looks that you can hack easily under 5 minutes.

Celebrity-tested hairstyles you can try yourself at home

Kangana Ranaut’s ‘I got this’ knot

Start by texturising your hair with a mouse and styling cream, before pulling it into a low ponytail. Divide it into two sections and create a knot with one and wrap the second section around the knot. You can take this look from day to play by loosely pulling out strands of hair from the knot to make it look undone.

Anushka Sharma’s classic fishtail

The fishtail is the messiah of lazy girl hairdos. The more mess you make, the better it turns out to be. To cop Anushka’s slightly messy version, create a off-centre side parting and bring the hair to one side to create a semi-loose fishtail braid (here's a quick guide on how to make a fishtail braid). If you have a fringe or bangs, then you can use Velcro rollers to style them into quick submission.

Katrina Kaif’s half-tied do

For once, Katrina Kaif’s low-key hairdo is actually effortless. To get this, first create an off-centre side parting. Then take a small section from either side and connect with an elastic band behind the head, so the ears are exposed. Use a fine-tooth comb to tease out small sections of hair to shape the face.

Katrina Kaif’s half-done top knot

The hairstyle that’s fast becoming Bollywood’s favourite for the season is surprisingly easy to hack. Use a shine serum to get a glossy, wet look. Then section your hair into two. Use one section to create a top knot at the crown of your head. Clip part of the side sections of the remaining hair behind the head and then brush out the rest. You can tease out wisps of hair to frame your face for a more unstructured look.
