LED Light Therapy Is The Trending Cure For Skin Woes

You may have come across the Instagram popular LED face masks that exude a Westworld vibe, thanks to celebrities like the Kardashians. But do you have any idea what they are or how they work on one’s skin? Experts say they are the secret to transformed skin at home. But before you make room for the mask in your beauty cabinet, here’s a dermatologist-approved guide.

What Is LED Light Therapy?

LED or light-emitting diode releases a narrow spectrum of visible light into the skin, which is useful in curing a multitude of skin concerns, from wrinkles to acne scars. They have different colours because of varying wavelengths of light. Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, explains the procedure, “When light penetrates the skin tissues, molecules absorb it and alter the biological activity of cells causing conditions like acne, dullness, ageing and rosacea.”

What Do The Colours Do?

The red light “penetrates the skin to reach deep cells while boosting their regeneration. It increases the blood circulation, which helps in rapid cell turnover, improving fine lines and wrinkles,” explains Dr Jamuna Pai, celebrity dermatologist and founder of SkinLab clinics. Blue light has anti-bacterial properties, which inhibits the production of oil and ultimately reduce acne. Ideal for sensitive skin, green light helps improve hyperpigmentation or blemishes. And lastly, yellow light promotes the stimulation of collagen and fibroblasts for healthy skin.

Preparation And Effects

Before wearing the mask, it is important to cleanse your face with a soft formula that doesn’t irritate the skin. For eye protection, safety glasses provided with the device should be worn at all times. With consistent mask sessions, you can achieve repaired, rejuvenated and younger-looking skin. “It’s a gentle, painless and non-invasive procedure. You may feel a little warmth on your skin, but that’s about it,” says Dr Agarwal. She continues, “It is advisable to combine the light therapy with a regular skincare routine and in-clinic procedures with dermatologists for long term results.”

Be Careful

Although the LED masks are suitable for every skin type, the right light should be identified and used for individual skin conditions. For at-home devices, Dr Pai advises caution, “If used unsupervised, it can lead to burns in case of individuals with photosensitive skin. It’s best to consult your physician in case of any complications.”

Overall considered a safe complementing treatment in your vanity, LED light masks are trending for all the right reasons and here’s where you can buy them.
