Fashion weeks have become an intrinsic part of pop culture around the world, just like music, art and film. On the face of it, the 6-day industry extravaganza is a showcase of the designers’ latest collections to buyers, journalists and front row adorning celebrities. But it’s become so much more. Designers have taken to the runway to voice their support for diversity and inclusion and taken a politically charged turn in an increasingly uncertain world. London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2017 is no different.
So far we’ve seen 70-year old models walk down the runway, glittery unicorn beards, ‘Save the Earth’ pleas and our February cover girl Radhika Nair take one more step towards global domination. And these are just the highlights.
Denim done different ways
You’d think that there’s only so much you can do with denim but you’d be wrong. Fallstine Steinmetz collection at the LFW took distressed denim to a whole new level.
They even had a crystal encrusted denim suit that you need to see to believe it.
Versace is bringing back the thong
Versace’s edgier label Versus had models walking with their ‘Versus’ branded waistbands peeking cheekily from their pants. The label clearly agreed that it might be a little too shudder-inducing for some folks so they gave us several other options to try as well, like ankle straps, choker and a belly chain.
Unicorn beard is a thing
If you thought glitter beard was all that, then your inner 13-year-old has another reason to cheer. LFW saw unicorn beards making a debut at Jack Irving’s. But the beard was just the glittery tip of a weird and wonderful iceberg, Irving had colourful tentacles, holographic armour and reflective helmets among other things.
Age was just a number at Simone Rocha’s
While Simone Rocha is not the only one to celebrate age diversity this season, it was pretty cool to see 73-year-old Italian former model and actress Benedetta Barzini and 70-year-old Jan de Villeneuve model the label’s utilitarian pieces including the velvet trench coat that dreams are made of.
Cover girl Radhika Nair spotted
Radhika Nair continued her winning streak on international runways by walking for Mulberry and JW Anderson.
Celebrity studded FRow
Aside from all the fashion and new beauty trends, fashion weeks are a good place to go celebrity spotting. Aside from the FRow regulars, like Anna Wintour, London Fashion Week saw celebrities like Elie Goulding, Alexa Chung, Jourdan Dunn and Jamie Campbell-Bower.
Don’t put away that ear cuff yet
If you were tired of seeing ear cuffs in all shapes and forms basically everywhere since the past two years, then brace yourself for a little longer. Bella Hadid modeled dainty ear cuffs for Oscar de la Renta this season.
Fashion mirrored what you are probably screaming inside
Ashley Williams tweaked her famous ‘Girls’ crystal barrettes that had taken the world by storm during the US elections in 2016 and debuted new versions declaring ‘Misery’ and ‘Paranoia’ because, let’s be honest, that is the collective emotional state of the world most of the time. She also had a dress that read ‘Save the Earth’. Who knew bleakness could be so chic?
