If you’ve ever had to battle unrealistic deadlines, know that designer Masaba Gupta understands your pain. Arguably India’s most prolific fashion collaborator, the newest project that the multi-tasking designer has stuck her hands into is a collaboration with Levi’s that will see her designs displayed on the same platform as those from Justin Timberlake, Solange Knowles and Karlie Kloss.
“It’s been 50 years of the iconic Levi’s trucker jacket, so they’re putting together an exhibition at the Levi’s museum that’s they’re setting up in Los Angeles,” Masaba tells us. “They approached people from different parts of the world and who belong to various professions, so you have Justin Timberlake, Chance the Rapper, Miroslava Duma and Virgil Abloh from the label Off-White.”
Tasked with creating a garment that would represent India, Masaba settled on her trademark cow motif, filling the shoulder area of the jacket with hand-painted shlokas. “I did it while I was at fashion week,” she recalls. “I literally had one or two days to turn it around, so this photo you see is of me backstage before my show.”
The entire exhibition will feature only 50 trucker jackets and is due to be auctioned off for charity.
