On the heels of the news that Insecure actress Issa Rae and model Ayesha Curry would be joining the Covergirl family, 69-year-old model Maye Musk has just been announced, too.
Musk, who is a dietitian and nutritionist with two masters degrees, has been modeling for the five decades since she was a finalist for Miss South Africa in 1969. You may also recognize Musk as the mother of Tesla mogul Elon Musk, and at age 69, she has appeared in Beyoncé’s “Haunted” music video, starred in campaigns for Target and Clinique, walked the runways for Concept Korea’s spring 2018 show, and even graced the covers of ELLE Canada and New York Magazine.
“I think that’s one thing that’s kept me working in this industry for so long, my interest in self-representation,” Musk said in a statement. “It’s a big part of my role as a dietitian, too – helping people feel happy, healthy and confident exactly as they are. And recently, I’ve become so much more engaged in social media, particularly Instagram, which is yet another way I can show people the many different sides of myself.”

The IMG model and grandmother of ten has previously spoken about the decision to allow her hair to go white and the fashion industry’s slow embrace of older models.
“When I was younger, I was mousey brown and started putting in highlights with each child,” she told the Daily Mail. ‘By the time I had my third baby, I was pretty much a blonde and I stayed that way until I was in my late 50s. I thought, ‘I’m really tired of this and I’m going to see what’s underneath even if I never work again.’ So I grew it out white.”
Musk said that instead of getting less work, she actually got more.
“I’ll continue working as long as people want to hire me,” she said. “I have no plans to retire. When I go to shoots, the young models are excited to see me. It proves they can have long and successful careers, too.”
