Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared together for the first time since their engagement was announced.
Dressed in a dark blue suit, Harry posed for the media in the gardens of Kensington Palace alongside Meghan, who was dressed in a white coat reportedly from Canadian brand Line the Label. The Suits actress also gave a nod to her former Toronto home with a pair of 18K yellow gold and opal earrings from Canadian jeweller Birks.
When asked how he proposed, Harry replied: ‘That will come later.’ He added he was ‘thrilled’ to be engaged, while Meghan said she was ‘very happy.’
Reporters also asked Meghan to show her engagement ring, which she briefly revealed to the cameras for the first time.
Reporters were told Meghan’s ring was made from three stones: one from Botswana (where couple are said to have holidayed together) and two diamonds from his mother Princess Diana’s personal collection, ITV’s Royal Editor Chris Ship tweeted after the photo call.
During their joint interview with the BBC, Meghan also confirmed that Prince Harry designed the ring, which was reportedly made by court jewellers Cleave and Company.
‘The ring is yellow gold because that’s her favourite, and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,’ Harry explained to the BBC’s Mishal Husain.
Meghan described her new ring as ‘incredibly special’.
Commenting on the ring design, a spokesperson from jewellery experts Heirloom London told ELLE UK described the ring as ‘very simple and classic’.
‘It looks like two round diamonds with a cushion diamond at the centre,’ engagement ring specialist Ruth Donaldson said. ‘The two outer stones are about half a carat and the centre stone looks like it is around five carats.’
‘The setting is very simple and classic. The band is gold, which is good against Megan’s skin tone. The diamonds look as though they have been set in platinum, to keep the colour nice and white.’

As for the value?
‘For the everyman choosing a ring like this, you are looking at a value between £150-400,000 dependent on the stone quality,’ Donaldson added. ‘ But if you are Prince Harry, it isn’t so much what you paid for it, as what the ring is now worth just because you chose it! Especially with two diamonds belonging to the late Princess of Wales, which even if they are more demure, carry a legendary status. So that ring now is pretty priceless.’
Clarence House announced that the prince and his American girlfriend got engaged in London earlier this month.
The statement confirmed that they will marry in Spring 2018. Details of their wedding day are expected to emerge later this week.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said of the engagement:
‘We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to
know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.’— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) November 27, 2017
Congratulatory messages have been flooding social media since the news of the engagement broke. The Prince of Wales, speaking for himself and The Duchess of Cornwall, said: ‘We’re thrilled. We’re both thrilled. We hope they’ll be very happy indeed.’
