MIA’s new video is everything!

MIA’s new album is not simply an album. Matahdatah is an audiovisual project where she explores the idea of borders. She just released ‘Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than A Border’ filmed in two countries, with two songs. You’ll remember ‘Warriors’ off her 2013 album Matangi, and there’s a brand new song, ‘Swords’. In the six-minute video she shows us young girls wielding swords and sticks in South India (they do this with the kind of ease we show with ribbons). And in the other half, shot in Côte d’Ivoire, it captures a spiritual dancer. “My new song ‘Swords’ was filmed in a Temple in India and we recorded the clang of the metal to make the beat at the same time as shooting these incredible girls. ‘Warriors’ was shot in Cote d’Ivoire with a guy I saw in a youtube video doing the most incredible dancing. I tracked down that exact guy, flew out there and played him the ‘Warriors’ track. He did his thing for me. He is a spiritual warrior and communicates through dancing. It’s a lifelong commitment for him to be the designated spiritual body that channels that dance,” the singer said in the press release.
