Mila Kunis on the ‘f*cked up’ way she broke up with Macaulay Culkin
She takes the blame
Mila Kunis gave an intriguing and noteworthy two-hour interview with Dax Shepard for his podcast Armchair Expert where she discussed the initial response to her starting to date Ashton Kutcher and also, before that, just how bad her breakup with Macaulay Culkin was. Kunis and Culkin dated for eight years, from 2002 to 2010, when they were in their twenties.
Their split wasn’t bad because it caused her devastating sadness, she told Shepard; it was bad because she made it a horrible breakup. “No, I fucked up,” she said. “Like, I was an asshole in my 20s, and I’ll be the first to admit it. And that’s kind of something that took me a long time to come out and say yeah, you know what? I was a dick and I accept it and I own it now, and it’s fucked up what I did and it’s fucked up how I did it.”
“And so when I got to be single I said, I just need to figure myself out,” she continued. “Like, I genuinely need to know why I did what I did and, like, regroup myself as a human. And so I just did that and subsequently after 6 p.m., was open for business. But I didn’t want to date. I didn’t want to be taken out to the movies. I just wanted to have time for myself.”
It was “super hard” for her to forgive herself initially. “You know it’s been so long, enough time has gone by that I think that enough mutual friends have been like everybody kind of forgave everybody for what went down.”
Kunis spent two years single before her and now-husband Ashton Kutcher’s rom com-like, friends with benefits-turned-family-and-marriage begun. In the beginning, the two were ridiculously private about their dating. “We were crazy neurotic about keeping it a secret, probably to a massive fault where we alienated so many friends, I’m sure.”
Her own mother’s initial reaction also wasn’t glowing. “We were driving up to Laurel Canyon, and I was like: ‘Mom, I have to tell you I’m dating somebody.’ And she was like: ‘Oh, tell me! Who are you dating?’ And I was like: ‘You’ve got to brace yourself for this one. I’m dating Ashton Kutcher.’ And she literally was like: ‘Shut the fuck up’ in Russian,” Kunis said. “He was coming off of a divorce. He was post, post, post, way post-divorce, but I think there was a lot of misconceptions about the divorce.”
