MIUNIKU arrives at Le Mill

Sisters Tina (MIU) and Nikita (NIKU) Sutradhar have won approval from the big guns of fashion in just a year of setting up their luxury clothing and accessories label MIUNIKU. Known to mix minimalism and maximalism, the duo bagged the Special Jury Prize at the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers 2014, the Fashion Innovation Award at London College of Fashion and the ISKO Denim Diffusion Award in 2013. After showcasing at an off-the-schedule presentation at London Fashion Week earlier this year, the girls have now brought their Spring/Summer 2016 collection ‘Before The Digital Age’ to the new Le Mill store in Colaba, Mumbai, for a trunk show that’s on till November 11, and available for pre-order. We caught up with the girls to know more about their new collection.

ELLE: How did you finalise on the theme for ‘Before The Digital Age’?
Tina Sutradhar: I’ve always been fascinated by how things worked in the older times, how they used to create motion pictures by drawing every frame on a different piece of paper. I saw a movie where this little boy was watching a movie through a lens where he pulled a lever and all the images started to move. That’s what intrigued me.

ELLE: Where did you find inspiration for pieces in the collection?
Nikita Sutradhar:
We’re looking at everything before the digital revolution. How we used to listen to music on CDs, cassettes and vinyl records – they all had a circular element. So we incorporated that into our detailing. We’ve used a lot of spacey elements and new fabrics such as mesh and velvet.

ELLE: What’s your favourite garment from the collection?
NS: I love the denim jacket!
TS: I like the use of velvet in most of our garments.

What’s your current favourite fashion trend?
NS: We don’t really follow trends. We’re in our own world and do what we feel like. We do visit a lot of exhibitions and visual artists for inspiration.

Available at Le Mill, 1st Floor, Pheroze Building, Above Indigo Deli, Stevens Street, Gateway of India, Colaba, Mumbai
