Model Tuhir Brahmbhatt on the advice Virgil Abloh gave him right before his big debut at Louis Vuitton

Not just another pretty face

By ELLE team  June 25th, 2018

Things got pretty emotional at the end of the Louis Vuitton Show at Paris Fashion Week with Virgil Abloh having his “first-ever” moment. But Abloh wasn’t the only one having an overwhelming day – the landmark menswear show was also the perfect international debut for Indian model Tuhir Brahmbhatt (@i_tuhir). “I was in London and when I went to my agency, I overhead my managers telling some clients over the phone, ‘I’m sorry, Tuhir won’t be available tomorrow.’ That’s when I was told that Louis Vuitton had booked me exclusively to debut at their show in Paris,” Tuhir recalls in shock. “It took a little long for me to believe what I had just heard.”

In keeping with his reputation as a personable and approachable designer, Tuhir reveals that Virgil Abloh walked up to him before the show to calm his nerves. “He’s very grounded and chilled out, There were so many models at the show, but he recognised me at the fittings and said ‘You’re the exclusive debut guy, right?’ He told me it was his first time too, and that it’s ok to be nervous. We even fist-bumped.”

Describing the moment he heard his name being called by the show runner as “larger than life”, Tuhir does admit he had a fan boy moment with a major star… but not Kanye West. “The whole experience was so grand, it would be unfair if I said there was only one moment. After the show, I realised there were many big celebrities there to watch the show. Later in the finale, I saw people standing and clapping for all, and I caught a glimpse of Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther. Damn!”

8 Indian models slaying it on international runways

Kelly Gale

With her striking strong features and a stunningly beautiful body, part-Indian, part-Australian model Kelly Gale is not a new name in fashion. The 23-year-old has been walking for the Victoria's Secret since 2013. She entered the fashion industry at a young age of 13 when she was discovered by a modelling agency outside a coffee shop at Sweden. She has walked for the biggest names of fashion; Chanel, Christopher Kane, Tom Ford, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren does not cover even half her list. The model also launched her own YouTube channel this May.

Dipti Sharma

Dipti Sharma had to rebel against her family, teach herself about fashion through Google, break society norms that she grew up in, and ignore icy criticisms that came her way to enter the fashion industry. Was it all worth it? Heck yea. Dipti was the second worldwide Indian exclusive to walk for Demna Gvasalia Balenciaga SS18 show in Paris. She now swaps between London, New York, Milan for fashion shoots and runways. She didn't grow up just to make her family proud but our country too.

Rasika Navare

Rasika Navarre is the face for top beauty brands like Smashbox Worldwide Cosmetics, Sephora, Chemistry, and Givenchy. The Pune-based international model is actually a medical technology graduate. Her love for travelling is what made her pursue a career in fashion. Well, good for her. Today she has hit so many runways including the New York Fashion Week and has been featured in several international magazines.

Pooja Mor

If the movie 3 idiots didn't inspire you enough to follow your passion, give Pooja Mor's success story a chance. The UP born international model took the decision to quit her career in engineering to follow her dreams. Her passion for modelling got her to walk for Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Victoria Beckham etc. This dusky bombshell is off making India super-proud, one international show after another.

Neelam Gill

Neelam Gill was spotted by a modelling agency at 14, but it was only after she turned 18 years old that her mother let her pursue modelling. It was worth the wait as her very first job was being sent to meet Burberry. Gill is the first Indian ever to be cast in a Burberry campaign, and she walked her first show at London Fashion Week in 2014. Apart from Burberry, she has also worked with Kanye West and Dior.

Tuhir Brahmbhatt

Tuhir Brahmbhatt just made his international debut at Louis Vuitton’s Spring menswear show in Paris. The model was also featured in Elle Honk Kong earlier this year. We're sure that this tall, dark haired boy is going to take the fashion industry by storm.

Lakshmi Menon

Lakshmi Menon is one among the pioneer Indian models who hit-off global fashion. She has consistently walked international runways since 2007. This Bangalore based beauty is the face of several high-profile ad campaigns including Givenchy, Hermès, Max Mara and has walked for Stella McCartney, Chanel, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren. She definitely is a mainstay in the fashion industry.

Natasha Ramachandran

For someone who was not allowed to wear heels till she turned 15, Natasha Ramachandran has come a long way from wining a beauty pageant in Hyderabad to walking for Zimmermann and Misha Nonoo at New York Fashion Week.
