Name to know: Rohini Maiti
The growing tribe of Indian singer-songwriters has a powerful new addition
Imagine a softly soothing voice that could easily become the soundtrack of a yearnsome rainy afternoon. You’d be surprised it was coming from a 16-year-old. Singer-songwriter Rohini Maiti, whose biggest inspiration is Lana Del Rey, only stumbled into music because of sibling rivalry — she really just wanted to beat her brother at the piano. Maiti has since taught herself the guitar and composed 70-plus originals. She’ll confess that she mumbled a little during her last performance in Mumbai, but her quiet voice, ponderous lyrics (‘I feel like a cloud, just floating around/My mind’s so damn loud, I can’t keep it down’) and growing fan base make it clear she has nothing to worry about.
