If there’s anyone who can juxtapose elegance with opulence, it’s fashion designer Neeta Lulla. She unveiled her new collection, The She Universe, on day 3 of the first-ever digital Lotus Makeup India Fashion Week 2021. With ensembles featuring sequined sari gowns, tassels, and fluid silhouettes, along with vibrant lehenga sets, and a unique, pre-stitched, wrap-around sari with an openable tie-up, the collection is dedicated to the indomitable spirit of a woman who is limitless, fearless and strong-willed.
We caught up with Neeta Lulla to learn more about her new collection, and the challenges she faced while presenting for a digital show.
ELLE: Tell us a little about your collection at LMIFW SS’21.
Neeta Lulla: As we come to terms with the transient nature of experiences compounded with an uncertainty that surrounds us now, we looked to be inspired by the world beyond. My collection, The She Universe, is an ode to the fearless, strong-willed woman, who is willing to break free and fly into the unknown. We’ve brought glitz, along with easy silhouettes, to our line. The collection of sari-drapes cusps the gap between gown and saris, and adds comfort and fluidity to occasion-wear.
ELLE: What was it like presenting for a digital show? Were there any challenges you faced while preparing for it?
NL: In the past, we did create one-off fashion films that were well received. But now the sense of excitement you feel while presenting at a live show has been replaced by awaiting the reception of the collection on social media platforms. I think working with a team long distance has its challenges too, but with a great team and constant communication, this is the innovative way into a new normal.
ELLE: Do you see fashion films becoming permanent in the Indian fashion industry?
NL: Yes, fashion films are definitely the way forward. Now the entire show-reel is a language of not only the overall look but also places a special emphasis on detailing. I see a lot of potential for experimentation here, in terms of showing the consumer a closer look at the collection.
ELLE: What is your favourite piece from your collection?
NL: My favourite piece has to be the wraparound sari, with multi-sequined work. It is versatile, comfortable and weightless while exuding glamour, sensuality and elegance.
