The year is 2017, and thankfully the wonders of technology aren’t restricted to fidget spinners. Skin treatments have advanced, and if you aren’t too keen about going under the knife, a host of non-surgical therapies are here to rescue you. From Cool Sculpting that freezes fat cells and flushes them out to Ultherapy that promises you the most toned skin of your life, skin specialist Dr. Chiranjiv Chhabra wants you to know your options.

6 non-surgical beauty therapies to try

Erbium YAG laser

You don’t have to be a Bollywood A-lister to be able to parrot the benefits of laser resurfacing of the skin. Deep facial lines, wrinkles and fine lines don’t stand a chance against this treatment. “It stimulates natural collagen growth so as to tighten and tone underlying skin which is smoother, softer and youthful,” explains Dr Chhabra.

How does it work?

“After meticulously cleaning the face, an intense beam of laser energy is given to skin with an inbuilt cooling system to make the procedure comfortable. Laser energy heats the underlying skin that helps in collagen remodelling. This procedure eliminates spots or scars and stimulates production of new collagen,” she says.

Don’t worry about: The procedure being painful, as is commonly believed. The treatment utilizes a cooling equipment to soothe the process and eliminate discomfort.

Thermage

This FDA-approved cosmetic procedure seeks to remodel collagen using radiofrequency energy. Thermage utilizes heat to tighten up the underlying surface of the skin, and promises a painless experience without any downtime for recovery. Experts usually recommend the treatment for sagging jowls, fine lines and to contour the jawline. The nonsurgical facelift of the future is finally here.

How does it work?

“Radioactive energy is used to create a heating effect in the deeper layers of the skin to restore existing collagen and stimulate formation of new collagen. Its unique ability to target all three layers of skin keeps skin rejuvenated and youthful for years,” explains Dr. Chhabra.

Don’t worry about: Fallout from the heat. The deep heating sensation is countered with a cooling spray on the outer skin. Bonus, the results last for two years, or more in many cases.

Ultherapy

This non-surgical procedure goes to town on loose skin by using micro-focussed ultrasound to lift and tone the required area. The time-tested energy of ultrasound does all the work of an invasive facelift, but without disturbing the surface of the skin. The results typically unfold over two months as newer, more elastic collagen builds over time.

How does it work?

“An ultrasound gel is applied on the required area, after which the focused ultrasound energy bypasses the surface of the skin and is delivered to pre-planned depths within the tissue below to stimulate collagen growth,” she elaborates.

Don’t worry about: A prolonged downtime. The treatment doesn’t introduce any foreign substances to the skin, and patients often carry on with their day after an hour-long session.

Affirm fractional laser

This pioneering technology employs two laser wavelengths to resurface the skin and works at an elevated speed, leading to 400% faster treatment. The affirm fractional laser produces varied levels of heat energy, which in turn helps to rejuvenate collagen.

How does it work?

“A numbing cream is applied 45 minutes prior to the treatment to make the process comfortable. Since two lasers are used, the desired results can be reached with lower frequencies, thus resulting in minimal discomfort and lesser duration,” explains Dr. Chhabra.

Don’t worry about: Any side-effects. The use of low frequency laser energy means that it is tolerated well by patients, and the anaesthetic cream renders the process virtually painless.

Electroporation therapy

Essentially non-invasive, this modality aims to penetrate actives like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, vitamin C and other youth extracts deeper into the skin. The payoff comes in the form of the most hydrated skin of your life, that’s also blemish-free and firmer.

How does it work?

The skin is cleansed and thoroughly exfoliated, after which skin actives are penetrated into the skin with an electroporation device in a circular motion.

Don’t worry about: Injecting skin actives without a needle. The non-invasive needle ‘meso’ is just as effective in penetrating the deeper layers of the skin. However, it requires regular follow-ups, so sticking to the schedule is a must.

Cool sculpting

Not too big on burning off excess fat? Give it the cold treatment instead, literally. Living up to its name, cool sculpting involves controlled cooling of the fat cells beneath the skin which thereby crystallize due to freezing and eventually die. This elimination of fat cells leads to sculpting of the body contours, and is credited among the few non-incisive methods of fat elimination.

How does it work?

“After an in-depth consultation on the areas to be addressed, the Zeltiq CoolSculpting applicator is then placed on those areas to apply controlled cooling. Fat cells in the area are crystallized and then gradually flushed out of the body,” she says.

Don’t worry about: Hampering your everyday routine. The process doesn’t require any anaesthesia, and is non-intrusive to the extent that patients are at the liberty to play games or scroll through Instagram during the treatment. Bonus, the results are permanent once the frozen fat cells are flushed out of the body, as the body does not generate new fat cells after puberty.
