There sure is a perfectly plausible reason for why the world is coveting Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger. The symphony of fashion, sports, heritage and innovation rightly captures the zeitgeist of today. This attitude, rightly named the ‘Onitsuka Tiger Attitude’ shines through in the Spring/Summer 2021 collection.
This collection consists of four themes: “The Sailing Kite,” “The Clean Lines,” “The Vintage is Now” and “The Working Progress.” The colours, cuts, and details of the products are inspired by the sails of a sailing ship that ripple with the wind.
“The Sailing Kite”: The design made of pieces of washer finish fabric sewn together with zig-zag stitching represents the sails of the sailing ship.
“The Clean Lines”: The nylon twill piece is resilient, yet supple and shiny to the touch, providing a rich impression.
“The Vintage is Now”: Inspired by vintage products of the past, the collection retains sporty elements, but fuses them with dresses, tops, and skirts for daily use.
“The Working Progress”: Using soft beige and white colours as a base, piping and tiered designs were added to sublimate the workwear into collection pieces.
The design inspiration for this series, supervised by the brand’s creative director, Andrea Pompilio, came from archival models developed in the 1970s. The low-cut ACROMOUNT™ model, featuring a combination of fabric and leather with a vintage feel, with its beautiful contemporary form will be released.
The design of the sole with a thin forefoot and voluminous midfoot, which were characteristics of track and field spikes at the time, has been updated for modern lifestyles using a mix of lightweight sponge and rubber. The large Onitsuka Tiger Stripes provide an accent to the classical design.
In addition, the ACROMOUNT™ KNIT model, integrating a knit material upper, which softly envelops the foot, with a sole, will also be introduced. Andrea Pompilio’s modern reinterpretation of the lines on the upper side, which were used on training jackets in the 1970s, has resulted in a shoe that unifies heritage and fashion elements. The ACROMOUNT and ACROMOUNT KNIT models will be on sale in select Onitsuka Tiger stores in India and on the EC site, April 2021 onwards.
The colour palette is made of highlight colours such as orange and sax blue, clean lines in solid black, and vintage colours like burgundy and turquoise, keeping the Onitsuka Tiger spirit intact and mixing it with contemporary pieces to offer fresh styles for all times.
