6 popular on-screen couples who’ve actually never dated in real life
Because the universe doesn’t work the way Tumblr wants it to
What kind of a world is it where Ross and Rachel aren’t together? Or Raj and Simran are married to other people?
The real world, that’s what.
It may be hard to accept but most of our favourite on-screen couples have never dated in real life. Mostly because they’re professionals who are good at their jobs and are happily married/dating other people.
But Ross+Rachel 5ever, guys.
Bollywood’s go-to romance classic Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge introduced fans to the now iconic Shah Rukh-Kajol pairing. But the only relationship is friendship, and not the kind which is the first step towards eternal love. Fans tend to forget that actors are human beings too and often project their lofty romantic ideals on them, especially when they share great chemistry onscreen.
Here are some popular couples who’ve never dated each other in real life. Despite what fans might have hoped for.
6 onscreen couples who’ve never dated each other
When you’re officially one of Asia’s sexiest men and a regular appointee in lists chronicling the 'world’s most beautiful women' lists, and have appeared together onscreen more than once, people are bound to go overboard on the shipping. It’s the rule of the internet.
Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave the audience a taste of their electric onscreen chemistry when paired together in Dhoom 2. The couple quickly became a fan favourite, despite the fact that Hrithik Roshan was then married to Suzanne Khan and Aishwarya to Abhishek Bachchan.
After Dhoom 2, it was alleged that the Bachchans were none too happy about the couple’s onscreen chemistry. Despite this, they’ve since been recast in Guzaarish and Jodha Akbar. “Hrithik has been a special co-star. We've shared a fantastic rapport that gets translated into wonderful chemistry on screen. We're both genuinely committed to our craft. That apart, we share a special friendship from the time we did a commercial together many years ago,” Aishwarya shared in an interview.
Bollywood’s most celebrated onscreen couple, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have appeared in seven movies together, including cult classic Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. While they may share bankable chemistry onscreen, they’ve never dated off screen. Shah Rukh Khan was married to Gauri Khan well before he became a big movie star, and Kajol eventually married fellow actor Ajay Devgn.
“We just complement each other really, really well,” Khan says. “It’s a very strange relationship. It can’t be equated with anything I can think of in words. When people call us friends, it’s awkward. Chemistry? That’s awkward. We don’t know what we have. I think we are the only couple in the world perhaps who have grown through the cinema that we have created,” Kajol admitted in an interview.
Still, their fans live in denial and continue to ship them hard.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio convinced the world that their love was real and warranted buckets of tears shed at the climax of Titanic, their first movie together. The couple has never dated in real life. In fact, it was Leo who gave away Kate when she married Ned Rocknroll in 2012. Leo has had a string of supermodel girlfriends, including Bar Rafaeli and Gisele Bündchen.
“It's so disappointing for people to hear that because, in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story, we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we never did. He always saw me as one of the boys; I've never really been a girly-girl. We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours and it was a shock to the system,” Kate responded to all the KLeo shippers in an interview.
After debuting together with Student of the Year, the actors have since been recast opposite each other in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. Their easy camaraderie translates into an immensely likeable romantic pairing, but despite rumours of the couple dating each other in real life, they are definitely not together. Varun has been in a relationship with designer Natasha Dalal since before SOTY released and Alia is datong Ranbir Kapoor. They have expressed displeasure at the constant speculation about their relationship status. “When these things come in, sometimes, it makes your work look frivolous. It makes people say things like, 'yaar, yeh log yahi kar rahein hain.' It got irritating at that point, but now, it’s fine. It’s part and parcel of being an actor, and you also take such things with a pinch of salt," Varun confessed in an interview.
If there’s one thing the internet collectively agrees on, it’s that Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling belong together. If we didn’t have proof of how much Ryan loves his wife Eva Mendes and daughters Esmeralda and Amada, we might have contributed with a fan fiction or two ourselves.
The couple first came together onscreen in Crazy Stupid Love, following it up with Gangster Squad and La La Land. Whether it’s the fact that they’re both disgustingly beautiful or that they seem like some of the nicest people around, fans can’t get enough of them. “Well, I like working with Emma, because I think she's secretly Canadian. That's why we get along so well. She's wildly apologetic for no reason at all,” Ryan answered when asked what it’s like working with Emma.
Friends' Ross and Rachel have become such an integral part of pop culture that it’s hard to believe that it was never real. But the bad news is, David Schwimmer (Ross) and Jennifer Aniston (Rachel) never dated in real life. Much like their onscreen counterparts, the actors have shared a hot and cold relationship over the years. In 2009, it was reported that Jennifer was looking to get pregnant and her ‘top candidate for artificial insemination’ was David Schwimmer. The unfounded rumours died after reports of David being ‘furious’ with Jennifer for saying that she was “unaware” of who his new fiancé was surfaced.
More recently, there was a lot of drama around Jennifer not inviting David for her wedding with Justin Theroux.
