With technology ruling our lives, it’s no wonder that its inexorable forces are now making their presence felt in one of the biggest and the most influential industries — fashion. And that’s what designers Pankaj and Nidhi’s Winter/Festive ’18 collection at the Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) was inspired by: the Nokia 6.1 Plus smartphone. The designer duo — who returned to LFW after three seasons — pushed the boundaries of innovation with their After Dark collection that took forward the synergies of the smartphone, right from its colour to its exquisite craftsmanship.
“The midnight glossy blue hue of the Nokia 6.1 Plus is what inspired our showstopper Kangana Ranaut’s dress; we wanted to have that deep midnight blue tonality for it. The smartphone uses real glass on both sides, and we’ve tried to achieve that reflective sheen through the use of patent leather embroidery,” Pankaj told us. “Elegance meets edginess in this dress, and that’s what makes it so unusual,” Kangana added. “The amalgamation of technology with creativity sets this collection apart.”
A-line dresses and blouses with voluminous sleeves, sharply tailored pants and bi-symmetric jackets and capes in shades of blues, greys, pinks and reds were decorated with “patent finish faux leathers, metallic hyper-twist yarns and graded geometric gemstones.” Chic and contemporary in equal parts, this collection will appeal to the modern Indian woman.
