Many of last week’s couture shows shared a Persian inspiration, and now Iran’s neighbour, Turkey, acts as cultural muse for some designers at BMW India Bridal Week 2015. Suneet Varma will present a collection that looks to the Ottoman Empire and incorporates Indian embroidery techniques, though, as Varma reminds us, “my thought process has always been European”. He told ELLE, “I have always been very fascinated with the dance of the seven veils as a story idea, and have fantasised about the lure of the Ottoman Empire, with its romance and sense of danger. Personally, I feel there is not a more beautiful museum than the Topkapi in Istanbul, with its architecture, tapestries and jewels.” How did he translate these influences into a bridal collection? “We have lots of thread embroideries with crystals and Swarovski pearls, pieces that are sheer and sexy, with three dimensional organza flowers, and, for the major bridal looks, Swarovski crystals with zardozi and badla embroidery with golden kasab thread to create a raised embossed effect.”
