After a 10-year hiatus, Varun Bahl is set to return to Lakmé Fashion Week. “It feels so different now,” he says. “In these 10 years, I have evolved tremendously and so has the platform. However, this change is great, I feel like I’m coming back with a fresh new take.” The Delhi couturier’s show will be the runway debut of his diffusion line. “While I love creating couture, my diffusion lines are also close to my heart. It gives me that creative satisfaction to be able to design what I want to without boundaries. My diffusion lines are usually on western silhouettes. They appeal to my ever-evolving customers.”
This collection – that according to the designer “represents 10 years’ worth of experiences and experiments on the runway” – will have jackets, trousers, skirts and shirts with contemporary Indian embroideries and hand-done techniques. “It has elements from almost all of my favourite shows,” he tells us. Case in point: the rose motif and dainty appliqué in silk. Expect to see intricate hand-embroideries in a colour palette of black, gold, silver, grey, ivory, beige, pale pink, pale blue and rose.
According to Bahl, the woman who wears his creations is someone who “is keen to celebrate her traditions, but does not want to be defined by them.” And this is reflected in the “modern western silhouettes” of his diffusion line.
Bahl will showcase his line at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014 on August 24 at Palladium Hotel.
