Last week, Ralph Lauren launched its first luxury store in India at New Delhi’s The Chanakya Mall. The glittering new store spans two floors and showcases the World of Ralph Lauren with Purple Label and Ralph Lauren Collection, alongside the classic Polo Ralph Lauren.
To celebrate, Ralph Lauren hosted an in-store cocktail event that was attended by the capital’s most fashionable, including Riddhima Sahni, Shalini Passi, Pernia Qureshi, Neha Kapur, Shivan and Narresh, Dhruv Kapoor, Prateek Jain, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna and Sid Tytler. The guest of honour at the glitzy event was global star, style icon and long-time friend of the brand, Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
We caught up with PC, who told us why Ralph Lauren has a special place in her heart, her go-to red carpet outfit for when she’s short on time, and fashion advice that has carried her through her two-decade-long career.
ELLE: Tell us a little about your association with Ralph Lauren and why the label is close to your heart.
Priyanka Chopra: I’ve always been a fan of Ralph Lauren. It has sustained its consistency over 50 years by being a fashion icon and maintaining its brand value. My first association with Ralph Lauren was at the MET gala where I wore a trench dress with a 20-foot trail which turned out to be one of my most memorable fashion moments.
ELLE: Do you have a favourite piece or silhouette from the new Ralph Lauren store in Delhi?
PC: From the current collection, I like the Taryn Evening Dress as it is the perfect outfit for a night out—simple yet glamorous.
ELLE: According to you, what’s the most unique thing about Ralph Lauren in today’s fashion landscape?
PC: Ralph Lauren is all about timeless elegance. The 50th anniversary celebration saw Ralph’s true favourites—velvet, beads and patch work. Season after season, one sees him stay true to his heritage, something that the brand is known for not just America but through the world.
ELLE: If you had 15 mins to get red-carpet ready, what would you do?
PC: If I had 15 minutes to get ready, I would wear jeans, a white oxford shirt and a Ralph Lauren blazer with my hair tied back into a sleek ponytail. I’d keep the make-up simple and dewy, with bold brows and a scarlet lip. Killer heels are essential!
ELLE: Which is the one fashion trend that you’re currently loving? And what’s the one fashion trend we’d never see you try?
PC: Currently crushing on all gold everything! Never say never—I wouldn’t shy away from trying anything.
ELLE: Have you ever made a fashion faux pas? Do you remember it? What is your advice on dealing with these?
PC: I’ve been working since I was 17. There have been many mistakes along this journey but they all have been learning experience. I think making mistakes teaches you what works for you and what doesn’t. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and not try and be someone else you’ll be able to pull off absolutely anything.
