Mother knows best

Mothers are known to possess the ability to locate long-lost objects, whether they’re your canvas sneakers or a plane lost over the Bermuda Triangle. They also know how to say the right thing at the right time and give life advice that is better than all the TED talks you can possibly stream. This holds true even when you’re one of the world’s most recognized faces. Between managing their Mumbai-based production house, Purple Pebbles Pictures, and shutting down trolls who attack her daughter, Priyanka Chopra’s mom Madhu dispenses life advice that helps her daughter navigate her way to becoming a global superstar.

From finance to body positivity, here are some of pearls of wisdom Priyanka Chopra credits to her mother.

Life advice from Priyanka Chopra’s mother:

On being financially independent

“My mom always says that when a woman is financially independent, she has the ability to live life on her own terms. I think that was the soundest advice that I ever got,” the Baywatch actress said in an interview with Livemint.  According to Priyanka, her mother sat her down and said, “You don’t know what curve balls life will throw at you. You should have the ability to take care of yourself and the people you love.”

On loving yourself

When Priyanka appeared as a guest co-host on The View, the actress talked about the body shaming she had faced early on in her career. “Before I became an actor, I met a producer about the possibility of acting. I was a beauty pageant winner at that time, Miss World. And he said that everything was wrong about me. He said my nose was not proportionate, the shape of my body was not proportionate." In another interview, she confessed that there was a time when she used to hate her eyebrows, “I used to be really, really conscious about so many things about myself, and my eyebrows were these thick, thick bold brows.” It was her mother’s advice that taught her the importance of self-love. “You can't be like anyone else, because you're born as you. You need to find what's unique about yourself and make that your strength. That's the best advice I ever got, and that was from my mother.”

On marriage and settling down

While she used to constantly worry about Priyanka getting married, Chopra Sr. has, reportedly, pressed ‘pause’ on the quest to find her daughter a good husband. For good reason too. "Today, I see many marriages are falling apart. People don't have the tolerance to give each other and their relationship so much time and to see it nurture,” she confessed in an interview. She told Priyanka that she should get married when she reaches a stage when she has time to nurture a relationship and give it the attention it needs and demands. “It's not like you have reached a certain age and now it is time to get married. That's the wrong basis for marriage," she added. Mother, are you listening?

On the right work ethic

Priyanka has attributed her professionalism and discipline to growing up as an army kid. You don’t get to be an international star without strict principles and a stand-up work ethic. According to Priyanka, it’s her mom who gets the credit for this. On the most important professional advice she’s ever received, Priyanka quoted her mother’s edict, “Respect people's time, and no job is menial."
