From Deepika Padukone to Sonakshi Sinha, our favourite looks of the week
Designer Suman Bhat spotted the name ‘Lola’ on a sticker on an ancient sewing machine gifted to her by her grandmother and decided to name her fashion label after it. The Goan designer started out by establishing her label on Facebook in 2013. Gradually, her label expanded to its own boutique in Goa, with a client base that includes Bollywood celebrities like Kriti Sanon, Malaika Arora Khan, Diana Penty and Shraddha Kapoor. According to the designer, her label offers a ‘serene balance between fluidity and structure’.
Founded in 1984 by Italian designer Alberta Ferretti, Philosophy focused on creating soft and feminine everyday dressing for women. When designer Lorenzo Serafini came on board as the creative director in 2014, the label acquired a touch of glamour when compared to its previously sedate offerings. His creations look best when in motion, owing to the heavy use of chiffon and georgette.
Malaysian-born, London-based designer Han Chong bridged the gap between high street brands and luxury fashion with his label Self Portrait. With a celebrity fan base that includes Beyonce, Kristen Stewart, Freida Pinto and Sonam Kapoor, the label is known for its heavy but innovative use of lace. According to the designer, the brand’s USP is that it presents classic feminine silhouettes with an edge.
Delhi-based designer duo Paras Bairoliya and Shalini Jaikaria launched their label, Geisha designs, in 2001. Known for their craftsmanship, the brand's USP comes from its unique use of beading. Both the designers come from a background of science and technology; this enables them to constantly explore new technologies in fabric construction and surface embellishments. The name of the label was the result of a coincidence, rather than a love for the Orient. Both Paras and Shalini were reading Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden at the time of their label’s conception and that’s how the name came about.
According to Shehla Khan, Sonam Kapoor wearing one of her designs on the Cannes red carpet in 2013 proved to be a turning point in her career. A bona fide member of Sonam’s squad, the designer is known for her ‘vintage-glam’ clothes. While Sonam has been a long term patron of the label, celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Priyanka Chopra are steady clients. The Mumbai-based designer comes from one of India’s first fashion families. Her father is the proprietor of Saks India and his embroidery business has been in association with design houses like Valentino, Elie Saab and Escada. Consequently, these European brands became huge influences in the designer’s own aesthetic.
