Sabyasachi’s new flagship store
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s loyalists need little introduction to his stores – anyone who has visited his retail spaces (reminiscent of Kolkata kothis) across the country, is familiar with the vintage photos that adorn the walls and the overcrowded bric-a-brac (ceramic plates, ittar bottles and vintage books). His flagship store in Mumbai, which opens to the public today, is all that, on a larger scale.
There are 22 vintage hand-painted chandeliers, 400 ittar bottles, recycled colonial furniture and framed period calendar art from the twenties that transform the 8,500 square feet space. Designed by the couturier himself, the space highlights Sabyasachi’s strong ties to his hometown.
Every nook and corner has a surprise – a Bengali edition of Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore, a book of poetry by Keats, a tropical cactus garden and a multitude of non-functioning clocks that are symbolic of the designer’s attempt at freezing time. And you would be forgiven if you lost track of time here.
“I want people to enjoy the spaces I create,” said Sabyasachi. “Buying clothes is only coincidental.” But falling in love with the clothes at the two-level store, located in the heritage Ador House in Kala Ghoda, is inevitable. The space retails his wedding and ready-to-wear collections, Sabyasachi by Sabyasachi, as well as menswear, and also introduces bespoke bridal jewellery created by Hyderabad’s Kishan Das and Co, curated by Sabyasachi. And for those who live in his hometown, you will soon be able to see all in this with Sabyasachi opening a flagship store in Kolkata soon.
