Sam Smith on being gender fluid: “I feel just as much a woman as I am a man”

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, singer Sam Smith has opened up about identifying as gender fluid, and not feeling like a cisgender man. “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man,” the 25-year-old told the publication.

Smith also revealed he often buys dresses and heels from Sydney’s famous drag store, House of Priscilla, when he’s in Australia. “Oh, my god, I just buy everything—heels, dresses,” he said. “We have a great time.”

Smith continued to say that this is something of a long-standing tradition. “There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really,” he added. “I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr. Martens and huge fur coats, for two and a half years.”

Touching on how he felt to come out as gay, Smith noted that he was worried about offending people by revealing his sexuality.

“Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending… And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village—I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”
