In November 1988, a young fashion editor by the name of Anna Wintour did the unthinkable for her first-ever magazine cover: she paired a Christian Lacroix haute couture jumper with acid-washed low-waist jeans. The image shocked the fashion world that had always elevated the world of haute couture in a way that made it completely inaccessible and therefore, irrelevant, to a younger audience. But Wintour proved that fashion can be fun, mixing high-low in a way that had never been done before. Sara Ali Khan wasn’t even born then, but at last night’s wrap-up party for Kedarnath, the young star inadvertently took the same idea and ran with it.
A card-carrying member of the cult of Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla couture, young Sara paired a bright yellow silk blouse by the designers with ripped skinny jeans, showing off her toned abs. It’s a bold, risky look from the progeny of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, who is usually far more demure in her fashion choices.
In an ode to her royal heritage, Sara is usually found wearing long-sleeved kurtas and voluminous ghararas to red carpet events, while sticking to a uniform of skinny jeans and T-shirts on days off.
If this is the start of a more experimental style — even one that won’t please everybody — we’re all for it.
