Selena Gomez just got dethroned as Instagram’s most followed user

Selena Gomez has lost the title she never was too keen on in the first place. The singer has just been dethroned as Instagram’s most followed user and is now second to soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo has been right behind Gomez for a long time, and just surpassed her follower count this morning. As of publication, she has 144,308,767 followers, while he has 144,309,204. So they’re relatively neck-and-neck—and these numbers are steadily growing—but Ronaldo has come out ahead.

This shift in rankings comes after Gomez announced she was taking a social media break last month and was reported to be taking time off to seek treatment for her mental health. She hasn’t posted on her Instagram since September 23, while Ronaldo’s last Instagram post appeared earlier today.

Gomez has spoken multiple times about her relationship with Instagram and why she doesn’t even have the app.

“I’m not on the internet,” she told ELLE USA in last month’s cover story. “I haven’t been on the internet in months. I don’t have my password for Instagram.”

“The reason why is, it’s not real to me,” she continued. “I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective. As far as my personal life, someone sees me having a glass of wine? I could give two shits. I’m not trying to hide. That’s my life. I’m living it the way I want to live it. But it’s about making a conscious effort—if I can have a moment to be with my friends, I’ll take that time. So I don’t have any of it. I had to make that decision.”

During an Instagram Live in late September, Gomez doubled down on that sentiment. “Numbers don’t matter,” she said. “None of this matters. I don’t care how many followers I have. I don’t. It’s insane so many people are obsessed. Like, chill out.” Which, fair enough.
