“The enduring, haunting quality of her paintings has always influenced me,” says Tarun Tahiliani of Amrita Sher-gil, a name that resonates through his Fall/Winter 2014-15 collection.
The designer is set to open Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week tomorrow, and it’s going to be a “gold rush.” Tahiliani takes traditional motifs inspired by jewels and brings them bang up to the modern day; expect to see statement pieces with necklines so ornamental, they render jewellery unnecessary. “The inspirations come from a range of subjects: the satlada or seven-stringed necklace, Mughal cameos, temple jewellery and rich tones of tapestry and jamawar,” he explains.
There will be saris worn with belts, tops and tunics with dhoti pants, jackets with salwar pants, kediya tops with lungi skirts and belted kaftans in contrasting black and white, deeper shades of ruby, emerald, topaz and rust. You won't have to wait much longer.
