Meet the designer behind Sonam Kapoor’s controversial jumpsuit

All you need to know about the most talked about looks of the week

By Salva Mubarak  March 6th, 2017

This week’s style file can be summarized by Sonam Kapoor’s two recent outings. She struck a pleasing balance between a high fashion look that’s best reserved for a fancy red carpet and another that can be worn to a girl’s night out or just a fun first date.

Continuing with the same theme of casual-chic vs all-out dressy, Anushka Sharma stepped out in Masaba Gupta’s latest denim line while Sonam Kapoor chose a jumpsuit that birthed several sexist headlines and caused the actress to tweet her disgust at them. Her other look was more casual and slightly reminiscent of Deepika Padukone at Shahid Kapoor’s birthday party with similar wide-legged gold pants. Across the pond, Katy Perry paired her new cropped hair do with a classic gold and white gown while Kriti Sanon, back at home, gave us another reason to try flared denim jeans again.

From elaborate gowns to denim done different ways, we’ve rounded up our favourite looks and here’s what you need to know about the brains behind them.

Sonam Kapoor’s jumpsuit and other celebrity looks we loved

Anushka Sharma in Masaba Gupta

Masaba Gupta gave us a taste of what to expect from her denim collection with Sonam Kapoor’s internet-breaking denim sari a while back. Her latest collection features everything denim, except jeans, like crop tops, saris, summer ready dresses. Anushka Sharma showed us one way to wear Masaba Gupta’s denim this season and we can hardly wait to try it ourselves.

Katy Perry in August Getty Atelier

August Getty counts Rachel McAdams wearing one of his designs at the 2016 Oscars red carpet as a career defining moment. The LA-based Italian designer is a Getty from the famous American Getty oil dynasty. The opulence of the Getty lifethe elegant and ‘delightful’ socialites and the sprawling gardens at the family’s European estatefiltered into his collections. The early memories of playing with his mother’s couture dresses have made an impact on his signature look of classic feminine silhouettes that don’t shy away from exploring structure and fluidity simultaneously.

Sonam Kapoor in Deme by Gabriella

Even though she cites Jackie O as her style inspiration, there is very little about her classic style that reflects in Gabriella Demetriades' label 'Demi by Gabrielle'. The South African model-turned designer’s fashion label presents everyday casual outfits with an edge. Launched in 2012, the ready-to-wear label has found fans in celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Malaika Arora Khan and more.

Sonam Kapoor in Rosario Atelier

The look that launched a thousand tweets is from the design studio of Moscow-based label Rosario Atelier. Just to bring you up to date, Sonam expressed outrage after some media outlets claimed that she was 'uncomfortable' in her revealing jumpsuit and slammed the headlines for being sexist and focused on issues that 'aren't pertinent'. The look of the moment represents the brand's aesthetic that is unapologetically female, complete with frills and ruffles for days. Designer Rasida Lakoba specializes in creating bespoke creations that reflect each individual’s personality as best as they could.

Kriti Sanon in Sonaakshi Raaj

The Mumbai-based designer is perhaps best known for her ‘sari gowns’ that took Bollywood by storm, with celebrities from Sonam Kapoor to Deepika Padukone ditching traditional silhouettes in favour of the edgy new style. Sonaakshi Raaj’s designs are distinct with their blend of classic and modern — case in point the super flared denim jeans with a frayed edge that Kriti Sanon wore at a recent event.
