Sonam Kapoor’s statement sleeves will make you reconsider the bold trend

Go big, go bold

Sonam Kapoor is on a roll. One simple scroll through her Instagram account will give you a glimpse into the starry life of the the Neerja actress, who in the last couple of weeks has given us stunning head-to-toe couture looks. Sonam — with help from her sister and stylist Rhea — has a knack for picking figure-flattering ensembles that work well on her svelte frame. And this time is no different — Sonam Kapoor’s statement sleeves and exaggerated shoulders show her love for the Spring Summer 2018 trend (check out A-listers like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone who’re also sporting it).

Voluminous sleeves, however, first came into fashion in the 15th century, when dressing became exaggerated — long sleeves, trailing gowns, large hats — which were symbolic of one’s status in society. Portraits of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth 1 depicted her decked in elaborate dresses that completely obscured her body. The peasant class, on the other hand, wore functional clothes sans the exaggeration. Even today, gargantuan sleeves are worn by the fashion-conscious consumer, reiterating the cyclical nature of fashion.

6 times Sonam Kapoor’s statement sleeves grabbed our attention:

Give your classic white shirt a modern makeover with flared statement sleeves. Sonam pulls off the Kojak Studio shirt with fitted tailored Yves Saint Laurent pants and Gucci pumps. The classic black and white combination never fails to work, does it?

Why only wear a statement blouse when you can go all out? Here, Sonam works her statement-making Janashia blouse with cropped, flared pants that add length to her frame. A bold belt in brown and stiletto heels round off her ensemble.

For the We The Women Asia Summit 2017, Sonam picks a black pantsuit with oversized shoulders and sleeves by Simon Porte Jacquemus that has all our attention. A black clutch, pumps and minimal make-up completes her look.

Sonam’s menswear-inspired shirt with balloon sleeves by Nabil Nayal is 21st century’s retort to the traditional white shirt. And what else do you round it off with but black?

You can’t go wrong with a white shirt and red lip! @nabilnayal

Like Kareena Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut have proved in the past, airport style is taken very, very seriously. Here, Sonam wears a belted sari dress by Rheson that she layers with a denim jacket with structured shoulders.

Who knew puffed sleeves and peplum could look so good together? The A-lister picks a George Keburia polka dotted top with black flared trousers that she completes with black pumps and silver hoop earrings.
