Stacking costume jewellery is an Instagram style star’s go-to trick, but even the boldest sartorialist would think twice before attempting to pile on more than one heavy polki or kundan neckpiece. Which is why our latest cover shoot, featuring India’s original supermodel Ujjwala Raut and styled by Elle’s Fashion Director Malini Banerji, is a godsend. “Today, everyone is very open to trying new things. It could be a mix of jewellery that’s matte finished or shiny. You should play with contrast and make it interesting,” insists Malini.
Here’s what you need to do to break out of your jewellery comfort zone and really earn that style icon status.
Choose jewels in complimentary colours

“There was a focus on fine Indian elements from the outfits to the jewellery,” says Malini. “The craft pairs similar colour per design, which makes it easier to pair them and also doesn’t take away the person.”
Don’t let the clutter confuse you
In the shoot, Malini picks this look — a silk kurta from Bungalow 8 paired with a kundan necklace and earrings from Amrapali — as her favourite. “The photo is otherwise so busy due to the quilts, cushions and printed silk. There are so many textures at play and it was a challenge to weave in jewellery. There are different aspects coming together like pearls and kundan, rubies and a mix of colours, which eventually balance the elements. The pieces need to be from the same family and not starkly different.”
Pay attention to the base metal

“Playing with colours is nice, but the base can be similar: matte gold or rustic hues,” she recommends.
